Waiting for the Morning Star

Revelation 2:18-29

Take-Home Truth: The church must cling to the truth of Scripture and the hope of Christ in the midst of distractions and false teachers.

Christ-Connection: Jesus, who has done all the heavy lifting for us, is the hope for believers.

Hook: (Ice-breaker question. Get the group talking!)

  1. Share a time in your life where busyness has distracted you from taking care of the more important things.

Engage: (Observe the passage and engage with the text)

  1. As a group, read Revelation 2:18-29 together aloud. Make observations. Discuss and unpack these verses together.
  2. How does Jesus refer specifically to the city of Thyatira, and what does this show about his personal connection with the church (vv.18-19, 26-28)?
  3. Discuss the ways this text shows both the anger of Jesus and the patient mercy of Jesus (vv. 21-23).

Reflect: (Reflect upon the key take-aways from the sermon)

  1. Richard stated, “If we focus on meeting needs more than pursuing holiness, we open the door to moral impurity.” What are some ways you’ve seen a busy schedule become a distraction from the pursuit of holiness?
  2. Richard also said, “If you are ruled by Christ now, you will rule with Christ later.” How does this future hope give you the strength to hold on now?

Respond: (Apply the truths of God’s Word to your heart, affections, and actions)

  1. The false teachers of our day are much more subtle, but their message is just as potent. What are some of the “new” doctrines that we are tempted to accept? How do we resist them?
  1. Jesus gave the faithful members of the church one command: “Except to hold on to what you have until I come” (v. 25). What is one truth from Scripture that you can “hold on to” this week as you seek to endure?
