The Church that Sickened God

Revelation 3:14-20

Take-Home Truth: We need to humble ourselves, repent from our pride, and  remember that Jesus is the source of all blessings in our life, so that we can be a comfort and refreshment to a hurting world around us.

Christ-Connection: Come to the table–He is always waiting and ready to walk through the door to have rich fellowship with us despite our shortcomings and our lack of worthiness.

Hook: (Ice-breaker question. Get the group talking!)

  1. Share about a time where you had to spit something out of your mouth because it wasn’t what you expected.

Engage: (Observe the passage and engage with the text)

  1. As a group, read Revelation 3:14-20 together aloud. Make observations. Discuss and unpack these verses together.
  2. Laodicea’s problem was arrogance, caused by affluence, resulting in apathy. Where in the passage do you see evidence of these three characteristics?

Reflect: (Reflect upon the key take-aways from the sermon)

  1. Richard said: “It is possible to be totally delighted with your life while God is totally disgusted with your heart.” How do we take delight in our lives in a way that disgusts God?
  2. Richard said: “A lukewarm Christian can bring more damage to the name of Christ than a 1000 demons.” How should this convict each of us?
  3. Richard quoted 1 Timothy 6:17-18 as an antidote to lukewarmness caused by affluence. What are practical ways that we can apply the command of verse 18 in our lives? What change would we see in the world around us if the Church lived out this command?

Respond: (Apply the truths of God’s Word to your heart, affections, and actions)

  1. Revelation 3:19 tells us to be earnest and repent. Richard challenged us to: “tell God to move in your life”. Are we afraid to ask God to really move in our lives? If so, why? How does arrogance, caused by affluence, resulting in apathy affect our willingness to allow God to move in our lives?
  1. How can we be encouraged by the invitation of Revelation 3:20? How does His willingness to fellowship with us–despite our shortcomings–enable us to reach the hurting world around us?
