Stephen: The Christ-like Man

By Phud Chambers

January 18, 2026

*NOTICE: The emphasis of our discussion is to see how the Written Word (Bible) and the Spoken Word (Preaching) work together to build up the believer, so when you see WORD in the questions, know it refers to the Scripture and the Sermon.

Recap: Look back for evidence of God’s word reshaping your heart and life.

  1. Does anyone have a testimony to share with the group of how you applied last week’s “Respond” section?

EngageLook into the Word of God in light of Sunday’s preached sermon.

  1. Read the passage from Acts 6:8-15 as a group and discuss your initial observations.

Reflect: Look deeper at the preached and written Word.

  1. In what ways does Stephen’s willingness to serve as a ‘table waiter’ despite having apostolic power challenge our own attitudes toward humble service versus recognition?

  1. Stephen demonstrated “present trust in God, whatever the obstacles.” What obstacles are you currently facing that require this kind of faith? How does Stephen’s example encourage you?

  1. Stephen was “full of grace” both because he received it and because he gave it to others—which aspect of grace (receiving or giving) do you find more challenging in your relationships?

  1. When facing opposition or lies like Stephen did, what does it look like to persevere faithfully rather than trying to defend ourselves or prove our accusers wrong?

  1. The sermon concludes that Stephen’s life was ultimately about reflecting Jesus, not about Stephen himself—how can we ensure that our own spiritual growth and ministry point others to Christ rather than to ourselves?

Respond: Choose one or two of the following applications of Sunday’s message and commit to it/them this next week.

  1. Cultivate a daily prayer habit to strengthen your faith and trust in God’s guidance.
  2. Regularly ask for the Holy Spirit’s empowerment to lead a life that glorifies God in all you do.
  3. Volunteer for a service project or outreach initiative in your community to actively participate in mission.
  4. Dedicate time each week to study Scripture, praying for wisdom to share the gospel with clarity and grace.
  5. Face challenges and opposition with courage by leaning on the support of your faith community and trusting God’s plan.
