Submission by Design
By Richard Smith
11/3/2024
NOTICE: The emphasis of our discussion is to see how the Written Word (Bible) and the Spoken Word (Preaching) work together to build up the believer, so when you see WORD in the questions, know it refers to the Scripture and the Sermon.
Recap: Look back for evidence of God’s Word reshaping your heart and life.
1. Does anyone have a testimony of how last week’s WORD (meeting needs and were you able to follow up) was put into practice?
Engage: Look into the Word of God in light of Sunday’s preached sermon.
2. Review Colossians 3:18; Genesis 2:7-23; 3:1-24 and discuss highlights.
Reflect: Look deeper at the preached and written Word.
Richard defined biblical submission as: “The joyful desire of a wife to strengthen her husband through encouraging, helpful, and wise support that he may succeed in his God-given role to serve and lead their family.”
3. How does God’s description of “helper” redeem your understanding of submission?
4. Discuss the value of the role of the wife’s submission in light of the biblical evidence Richard shared giving attention to the word “helper.”
5. Richard talked about God’s design of roles in marriage. Summarize Satan’s design to reverse these roles.
Respond: Look ahead and around to see how you can be obedient and missional.
6. How does the wife’s fitting submission paint the picture of the gospel (cf. Colossians 3:18; Hebrews 2:10)? Why is this necessary? What is at stake?
7. What are some steps you can take this week to change your perspective of submission?
