Why We Love Spiritual Formation

By Richard Smith

August 31, 2025

*NOTICE: The emphasis of our discussion is to see how the Written Word (Bible) and the Spoken Word (Preaching) work together to build up the believer, so when you see WORD in the questions, know it refers to the Scripture and the Sermon.

Recap: Look back for evidence of God’s word reshaping your heart and life.

  1. Does anyone have a testimony to share with the group of how you applied last week’s “Respond” section?

EngageLook into the Word of God in light of Sunday’s preached sermon.

  1. Read the passage from Acts 2:42-44 as a group and discuss your initial observations.

Reflect: Look deeper at the preached and written Word.

  1. Richard mentioned spiritual formation as a ‘conscious process’. How can we be more intentional about our spiritual growth rather than passive?

  1. How can we avoid falling into either fear-based or pride-based religious routines? Which is your tendency? What does healthy spiritual motivation look like?

  1. The sermon emphasizes that knowledge should fuel love for God. How can we ensure our Bible study leads to greater affection rather than just information?

  1. How do we maintain the kind of hunger for Scripture that motivates our hearts beyond legalism to read God’s word frequently?

Respond: Choose one or two of the following applications of Sunday’s message and commit to it/them this next week.

  1. Commit to reading the Bible “frequently” this week. Set realistic goals for brief morning, midday, and evening readings.
  2. Before reading Scripture, pause and pray, acknowledging that God Himself has given you this book to know Him better.
  3. Choose one verse or passage to meditate on throughout the day, focusing on how it increases your affection for God.
  4. Evaluate your current spiritual practices. Are they primarily information-focused or affection-focused? Make adjustments as needed.
  5. Share with the group next week how approaching Scripture with expectancy and a focus on loving God (rather than just gaining knowledge) impacted your spiritual life.
