Extravagant Love

By Richard Smith

August 18, 2025

*NOTICE: The emphasis of our discussion is to see how the Written Word (Bible) and the Spoken Word (Preaching) work together to build up the believer, so when you see WORD in the questions, know it refers to the Scripture and the Sermon.

Recap: Look back for evidence of God’s word reshaping your heart and life.

  1. Does anyone have a testimony to share with the group of how you applied last week’s “Respond” section?

EngageLook into the Word of God in light of Sunday’s preached sermon.

  1. Read the passage from Luke 7:36-50 as a group and discuss your initial observations.

Reflect: Look deeper at the preached and written Word.

  1. In what ways might we, like Simon the Pharisee, unintentionally create barriers that keep others from experiencing God’s grace?

  1. Simon the Pharisee failed to show Jesus basic hospitality, while the woman lavished attention on Him. What might this reveal about their respective attitudes towards Jesus?

  1. How might recognizing our own spiritual debt change the way we view and treat others who are different from us?

  1. Why did Jesus end his interaction with the sinful woman by saying “Go in peace”?

Respond: Choose one or two of the following applications of Sunday’s message and commit to it/them this next week.

  1. This week, practice showing hospitality to someone unexpected, remembering how Jesus welcomed the “sinful” woman.

  2. Reflect on areas in your life where you might be relying on your own “goodness” rather than God’s grace. Write these down and pray about them.

  3. Identify someone you may have judged harshly. Consider how Jesus might view them and pray for an opportunity to show them kindness.

  4. Share with the group a time when you experienced forgiveness (either giving or receiving). How did it impact your faith?

  5. Memorize Luke 7:50: “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” Reflect on what this means for your daily life.
