The God Who Can’t Sleep

By Dan Yacoviello

July 27, 2025

*NOTICE: The emphasis of our discussion is to see how the Written Word (Bible) and the Spoken Word (Preaching) work together to build up the believer, so when you see WORD in the questions, know it refers to the Scripture and the Sermon.

Recap: Look back for evidence of God’s word reshaping your heart and life.

  1. Does anyone have a testimony to share with the group of how you applied last week’s “Respond” section?

EngageLook into the Word of God in light of Sunday’s preached sermon.

  1. Read Psalm 121 as a group and discuss what stands out in the text.

Reflect: Look deeper at the preached and written Word.

  1. In what areas of your life do you need to ‘lift up your eyes’ and look to God for help, rather than relying on your own strength or earthly solutions?

  1. How does the idea that God is simultaneously keeping every believer worldwide while also maintaining the universe challenge or expand your view of His power and attention?

  1. How does the promise that God will ‘keep your life’ (or soul) impact your view of death, suffering, and eternal security?

  1. Discuss the paradox presented at the end of the sermon: the God who can’t sleep (Psalm 121) and Jesus sleeping in the boat (Mark 4:35-41). How does this deepen your understanding of Jesus’ nature and mission?

Respond: Choose one or two of the following applications of Sunday’s message and commit to it/them this next week.

  1. Daily Reflection: Each day this week, take a moment to “lift your eyes” and acknowledge your need for God’s help. Write down one way you see God keeping you that day.

  1. Memorization: Choose a verse or more from Psalm 121 to memorize this week. Reflect on it throughout your day.

  1. Prayer Practice: Before making decisions this week, pause to pray, recognizing God as your keeper and guide.

  1. Encouragement: Reach out to someone who might be going through a difficult time. Share with them the promise of God’s constant care from Psalm 121.
