“We Demand a King”

Take-Home Truth: Jesus is the only good king. He demands and deserves our allegiance and worship.

Christ-Connection: Only Christ can take away the Holy wrath of God that we deserve. (Rom 5:9)

Hook: (Ice-breaker question. Get the group talking!)

Describe a time when you got what you really wanted but it was not what you expected.

Engage: (Observe the passage and engage with the text)

Read 1 Samuel 8:1-9 and discuss the three attitudes (arrogance, ignorance and forgetfulness) of the people of Israel.
Read 1 Samuel 8:9-21 and discuss what having an earthly king was going to cost the people of Israel.

Reflect: (Reflect upon the key take-aways from the sermon)

How is God showing His grace to the people by warning them of what would be coming in service to an earthly king?
Warren Wiersbe said “The greatest judgement God can give is to let us have our own way”. How have you seen this in your own life?
Compare and contrast this passage with Romans 1:18-32. What was the result of God turning them over to their desires? (v24, 26, 28)
