To Marvel At An Awesome God

Revelation 5:1-14

Take-Home Truth: Our sin requires the sacrifice of a perfect human to bring salvation to the world which inspires us to worship. 

Christ-Connection: Christ is the perfect human sacrificial lamb.

1. Share a time when you thought a problem couldn’t be solved but you were able to find a solution.

Engage: (Observe the passage and engage with the text)

2. As a group, read Revelation 5:1-14 together aloud. Make observations. Discuss and unpack these verses together.
3. Read Genesis 1:27-28 and 3:6, Hebrews 2:17 and 4:15, Revelation 5:6-7, 9.  Considering these verses, continue to flesh out Richard’s question: “Why is God not worthy to open His own scroll?” (Revelation 4:11) 

 Reflect: (Reflect upon the key take-aways from the sermon)

4. Our sin required the Lamb to be slain. Reflect on your views of your personal sin. In what ways are you minimizing your sin and devaluing the importance of Christ’s sacrifice?
5. We marvel at how the sacrifice of One led to the salvation of many.  Read Acts 2:1, 4, 5, & 12.  Discuss God’s plan for providing salvation to all the nations.

7. In what ways have you looked at God as only a lion or only a lamb?  How does this limited perception distort your expression of worship?  Would a fuller understanding of God’s triune nature change this? *see Kevin DeYoung quote below.
8. How does the awareness that the Lamb died for you compel you to worship with increasing intensity as inspired by the angels and elders? (Revelation 5:11-13)

As you look for meaning in your life consider this: A God that is only a lion or only a lamb is only half the God that you need. Think about it; you hurt and you suffer. So you need more than a King to rule over you. But you also lack wisdom and direction, so you need more than a tender hand to comfort you.  You sin and you struggle as you need a lamb who can deal with the guilt that you feel. You sin and you struggle and you need a lion who can devour the evil that works in you and works against you.  What good is a lion-like God if He does not take care of sin, and He only rules by His roar? And what good is a lamb-like God if He does not triumph over sin and deal with the wrongs in the universe?
